Card detection is not a reliable process.
1. I don't know about any cards that can work as both
xd and sd. The electrical contacts are different. sd
has 9 (or 8?) contacts on the front edge. xd has more
(16?) contacts arranged in two funny lines on the
bottom side.
When inserting cards, be sure to place contacts (small
golden plates on the card surface) facing down.
2. Sometimes mechanical problems with socket can cause
funny things to happen. If you've seen the card
working , it may be that your socket requires cleaning
or some other adjustment.
